Yesterday was a sad day at our house. Hailey has a pet Lizard, Lizzie. Kaden has a pet Lizard, Spike. They are both bearded dragons. We have had Lizzie since March. Lizzie was smaller than Spike. She would lie on his back all the time. They would sleep together, eat together…ok, not like they had a whole lot of choice, they were cage mates.
Well, Hailey was playing in her room with K. They didn’t want to play with Kinley, so they sent her to Kaden’s room to play. She tells Hailey that Spike is eating Lizzie. (Kinley says this a lot, she thinks it’s funny to get all the kids running into make sure everything is fine.) She wasn’t kidding this time! Hailey came running into the kitchen to tell me that SPIKE IS EATING LIZZIE. To which I walk into Kaden’s room. OH MY GOSH, SPIKE IS REALLY EATING LIZZIE!!!!!!! He had her head and one of her legs in his mouth when I got in there. I pick Spike up, I shake him, I try to get his mouth to open, pull Lizzie’s tail, and push on Spike’s stomach. I tried to get him to take lettuce instead…although, thinking back, that one wasn’t too bright. I had K take Hailey and Kinley outside.

Thomas works from home, but since we are in the middle of trying to finish the basement, he was at one of his multiple hardware store runs….this happened in the middle of him being gone.
I call him. I am screaming and crying and just plain freaking out. He had to have me slow down say it a few times before he understood me. His advice? Go shut the door, if he has her head it’s already crushed and she is dead. Oh. And stop freaking out. Yeah. I’m traumatized. I liked the stupid lizards. My kid was freaking out. And, to be honest…it was freaky looking. Yeah, thanks Thomas.
So, I call my sister. She always has good advice. Took a bit for her to understand what I was saying, but by the time this happened, Spike was slurping Lizzie’s tail down like a spaghetti noodle. It took awhile for me and Hailey to settle down.
I thought I would try to use this as a learning time. So, I told Hailey to write about it in her journal, that it would help her remember Lizzie and help her feel sad and get through it. She let me read the entry…it is so sweet. She is so tenderhearted, and like she totally writes like this. HA HA HA, I love it!
We told her she can pick a new one once she is settled down in her new room downstairs. So, in a couple of weeks, when the basement is done, we will have to have a post on LIZZIE the second.

OK, now that is traumatic. I have never even seen Lizzie and I think I would be traumatized too! Poor Hailey! It's one thing for them to die unexpectedly, but to see them get eaten.... wow! I hope she is OK!
Poor kid, loing a pet is never easy but to see it happen thats bad. Ihave to agree with your freaking out though I would probably do the same.
That's so sad! One of our hamsters ate (part of) the other about a month ago. Ben cried and it was all he could talk about for days. I guess it's good for them to learn about pets dying but I wish it didn't have to happen in a "wild kingdom" kind of way.
Holy crap! That's insane! I hope your kids recover quickly. What a harsh way to learn about the world.
By the way, you cracked me up! I can't believe you still remember the story about the "Flake" Ranch. I will be teasing Dave brutally for that.
Wow.....I was thinking that lizard looked pretty fat yesterday when I went to get Arden out of Kaden's room once. Yikes. That kind of stuff really is traumatizing. When we had the fish tank Preston bought cute little clown fish and we had a yellow fish (not the tang) that decided he didn't like them and kept biting the poor things. I sat by the tank for hours and banged on the glass with my knuckles every time he tried to bite them...my knuckles got really sore and he ended up killing them anyway. I think that is around the time I decided I wanted the fish tank gone :) Poor Hailey.
Oh. My. Heck. Thank you, Alison, for that very descriptive account of Lizzie being swallowed whole. The images it put in my mind are just fantastic!
On a more serious side: I'm sorry you had to witness that. I would have been freaking out as well; but, holy crap, your post made me laugh! (after I had a moment of silence for the passing of Lizzie, that is...) ;)
Yeah, that could be tramatic! Eeek! Sorry about Lizzie!
Okay I am really trying hard not to laugh. Please don't tell Hailey. Yes I understand the trauma. That is so unfair. What a big bully!
Johnny's lizard, Columbus, was eaten from the inside out by meal worms. Gross!
I look forward to the info about Lizzie the 2nd. Ü
And I miss you!!!
WOW
Such a violent way to go! After I read your story I felt like I had just watched the discovery channel where the dingo dogs just carried off the cute little deer! Ugh! Growing up on a farm I witnessed way to many sad dying episodes! I am sure your daughter will remember her lizard & its passing for a long time. She will be OKAY - especially with such a cool mom to help her deal with the death of her lizard! You need to write a book! I love reading your stories! Lisa
I just have to tell you. My mom has been telling this story to everyone, even random strangers in the grocery store. She's such a nut! You can't help but love her!
